HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE
Gour Mohan Sachin Mandal Mahavidyalaya was established in 1968 by DrSatyendranath Naskar, a torch bearer in the field of education for the disadvantaged sections of society. Located in Mandirbazar Block of Diamond Harbour Subdivision in the district of 24 Parganas (South),the area is largely populated by the marginal sections of the society for whom prospects of higher education was a distant dream. GMSM Mahavidyalaya gave a platform to thousands of young boys and girls to realize their dream of accessing arenas of higher education. At present the college is situated at 13.1 acres of land with over 3000 students, offering Honours courses in 14 subjects and optional electives in 22 subjects in B.A,B.Sc and B.Com streams.
Dr Satyendranath Naskar found a patron in Sachindranath Mandal, son of Gour Mohan Mandal of the village Bireswarpur who donated land and money for the establishment of the college in its present premises. Other benevolent persons of the area too contributed land, money and service towards the establishment of the college. The college at present is situated adjacent to Madhabpur Station, on the Sealdah-Namkhana Railway Line. The Kolkata- Kulpi road runs past the college.
The college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta on 30th August 1969 for BA Pass Course. The college was granted affiliation in the B.Com Pass Course in 1978.A journey thus began increased the horizons of education to students who were first generation learners limited by socioeconomic deprivation. The college started Honours Courses in Bengali, Pol Science and Education from 1985.The Science stream was begun in 2000 with Physics,Chemistry and Mathematics. To promote skill based education, the college offers free vocational training in Garment Manufacturing affiliated to West Bengal State Council of Vocational Education.In keeping with the changing scenario of the higher education sector, the college has upgraded itself to incorporate online teaching to fulfill needs of blended learning, mentor mentee system to take individual care of the students, a digitized library with repositories of research papers and journals, incorporation of Indian value systems through Sanskrit learning and Yoga as an add on course .The college today is a green campus with rain water harvesting, solar light,organic farming, vermi composting,social forestry. The college works towards community enrichment through NSS,NCC and other awareness programs and surveys in neighbouring and adapted villages. For greater community good the local post office is situated within the college campus .An annexe of the Block health Centre has been built on the land donated by the college.
Inspired by the saying of Einstein the college is constantly endeavoring towards providing quality conditions of learning at minimal costs to promote holistic development of its students for it believes that there are two forms of education-one which teaches us how to make a living and the other and the most important mantra of how to live.
